Hello, my name is Kate Karwan Burgess, and I am the principle artist behind “K2BCREATIVE.”
When people find out I’m a photographer, I’m asked what kind of things do I photograph. I reply explaining it is not what I photograph, but how I photograph. I have a style and a vision that that I apply to various subjects. My documentary work is 100% photojournalism, no manipulation of the subject or the final images. I photograph weddings journalistically. I use the same documentary skills to anticipate moments, capture emotion, find details, and explore creative perspectives, but also make formal as well as candid portraits. I generally photograph portraits with natural or indirect off camera light, but I also use solid backdrops and studio lights for a more polished portrait look. Regardless of the background or light source my favorite portrait images are the ones that allow personality and humanity to shine through. My fine art work is often abstract. As much as I love documentary and wedding work, I can also get lost for hours and hours making abstract, up-close images of flower petals, playing with the light as it penetrates the layers.
I have a Master’s Degree of Photography from Ohio University’s School of Visual Communications, and a life long student of the arts. My photojournalism work is represented by Zuma Press. I specialize in editorial, portrait, wedding, and fine art photography. I am also skilled in print and web design and use those skills as an extension of my story telling abilities. I am passionate about what I do and how my work can help and positively impact society.
Before becoming a professional photographer I earned an undergraduate degree from West Point, The United States Military Academy. I served in the Army for seven years as UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter pilot before leaving to pursue my photography full-time. I speak a little Spanish and Portuguese, know a couple dozen chords on the guitar, and like to play Scrabble. I teach Spinning classes, indoor cycling, and in general like to ride my bike and be outdoors.
I live in Sonoma County, California, north of San Francisco with my “trophy husband,” twin boys, and miniature schnoodle dog named Bogey. I have a lot to be thankful for, but I am very thankful for my family, my career, and where I live. There is no doubt in my mind that photography is my calling, my passion. I have had tragedy in my life, felt horrible, been physically, mentally, and emotionally ill, but put a camera in my hand and in no time everything is right in my world.
